LOUVER HOUSE, ETTUMANOOR, KERALA
Project Team
Louver House is conceived as home designed in multiple layers. The design negotiates privacy, climate, and openness through controlled thresholds rather than expansive gestures. Located on a south-west facing plot in Ettumanoor, the design responds to heat and glare with architectural elements that temper the environment before it enters the interiors.
The defining feature is a series of wooden louvers on the front façade facing the road. These adjustable screens function as spatial filters, softening the façade while creating a transitional edge between inside and outside. Light is diffused, views are curated, and ventilation remains uninterrupted. The architecture therefore performs quietly, regulating indoor comfort without depending on artificial means.
Internally, the double-height central living core introduces vertical relief and encourages thermal movement, allowing warm air to rise naturally. The planning prioritizes flow and visual connectivity, with four bedrooms positioned to receive balanced daylight and cross ventilation.
A courtyard and pergola punctuate the mass with moments of shadow and texture. The terrace garden adds to this strategy, reducing heat absorption while offering a calm, elevated retreat. The garden reduces the indoor temperature and provides an elegant green view that breathes life into the house.
Material choices remain restrained and tactile — wood, muted finishes, and carefully selected furniture reinforcing a sense of composure. The result is a residence that does not seek attention through form, but through precision — a home shaped by filtering, layering, and climatic intelligence.
